- June 23 - Following is a statement today by Kate Michelman, president of the
National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL):
GEORGE W. BUSH'S CENTRIST
GOP HOPEFUL CALLS FOR "LAW TO PROTECT THE UNBORN"
"Just hours after NARAL
released an analysis of state legislative activity concluding that George W. Bush
led the most anti-choice legislature in the country, Bush expressed his hope that
all of America will have a 'law that protects the unborn child.' His position
on this critical issue should now be clear to all Americans.
"It is time for all the
campaign positioning and fuzzy language to stop. George W. Bush is anti-choice
and clearly is committed to taking away a woman's right to choose. His call for
a 'law that protects the unborn child' demonstrates that quite clearly. As his
record shows, George W. Bush is an anti-choice Governor and would be an anti-choice
"George W. Bush said 'it
will take leadership to convince people' to 'protect the unborn.' In Texas, he
has demonstrated this leadership with a legislative agenda that erodes a woman's
right to choose. His statement starkly illustrates his intention to apply this
leadership to eliminate the right to choose for the entire nation."
NARAL is conducting a public education campaign to expose the anti-choice position
of George W. Bush. That campaign expands with a press briefing today (June 23)
in Sacramento, Calif., to unveil NARAL's new Internet banner ads on George W.
