Population Communications International Launches Monthly Internet Service on the Eve of 'Year of 6 Billion'

WASHINGTON - December 31 - Global Intersections, an internet-based news digest and information service of Population Communications International (PCI), premiers today, presenting news, features and commentary useful to international journalists reporting on population issues.

The service will make the connections between the social, economic, scientific, and political factors that contribute to spiraling population growth. In 1999 the global population will reach the 6 billion mark. Population experts agree that the world population will not stabilize until the middle of the 21st century, presenting substantial challenges to all nations, the developed and the developing.

Global Intersections highlights innovative proposals to overcoming barriers to better family planning, and improved sexual and reproductive health. Global Intersections also covers efforts to stem violence against women, promote gender equality, improve educational opportunities for girls and boys, and delay marriage and childbearing.

"Progress in these areas invariably leads to lower birth rates and will relieve stress on the global ecosystem," said PCI President David J. Andrews. "The internet itself reminds us of our shrinking global village, and Global Intersections will assist journalists in covering the problems that lead to over-population. The service also will outline the problems of over-consumption in developed nations and the commitment required of all to address the needs of our 'village'," said Andrews.

Journalists and concerned individuals may subscribe -- free of cost -- by sending an e-mail to: majordomo@bway.net In the body of the message, type: subscribe global-intersections or subscribe by visiting the PCI web-site at http://www.population.org
