Senate Panel Votes to Ratify Historic Women's Rights Treaty
Statement of NARAL Executive Vice President Mary Jane Gallagher
WASHINGTON - July 30 - "Today's Foreign Relations Committee vote to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) sends a clear message to the President that the time has come to end any form of gender discrimination and promote human rights for women worldwide. I applaud both Senators Barbara Boxer and Joe Biden for spearheading today's committee action.

"CEDAW simply strives to ensure that women have equal access and opportunities in all aspects of public and political life by promoting equality from education to employment to property rights.

"NARAL urges the Bush Administration to follow the Senate committee's lead and join with 170 countries that currently support the 22 year-old treaty.
